ICMS Disaster Management Training Workshop – “Building Knowledge and Networks for Emergencies: Managing Floods, Fires and Theft” Conference, Network
The International Committee on Museum Security (ICMS) successfully conducted a Disaster Management Training Workshop from 6th to 8th October 2025 at the National Museums of Kenya, Nairobi.
The training brought together heritage professionals from Eastern Africa and Germany to enhance their capacity in disaster risk reduction, emergency preparedness, and response planning within museum and heritage contexts. Participants engaged in both theoretical and hands-on sessions focusing on managing and mitigating the impacts of disasters such as floods, fire, and theft.
Through expert facilitation, group exercises, and scenario-based learning, the workshop emphasized the importance of proactive risk management, institutional collaboration, and strategic response mechanisms to safeguard cultural assets. Beyond strengthening technical skills, the workshop also established a regional network of professionals committed to promoting resilience and sustainable security practices across heritage institutions in Africa and beyond.
ICMS extends its sincere appreciation to the National Museums of Kenya for hosting the workshop, The German Agency for International Museum Cooperation (AIM), ICOM Africa and ICOM Kenya and to all facilitators and participants whose collaboration made the event a success. Their shared commitment to advancing museum security and preparedness continues to play a crucial role in protecting the world’s cultural heritage for future generations.
