Almost two years of work by the editors (Michael John- Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, Hans-Peter Thiele- former Federal Office for Building and Regional Planning, Prof. Achim Trogisch- former HTW Dresden and editor of numerous specialist books) and other co-authors conclude here. Mr. Harras, long-standing head of the Security Technology Department of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, was also able to win over as an author for the chapter “Exhibit Monitoring”.

Mr. John, Mr. Harras and Mr. Thiele are long-standing members of ICOM/ICMS, Mr. Harras was Secretary from 2001-2007, Chairperson from 2007 to 2010 and Mr. John was a Board Member from 2010 to 2013 and Treasurer of the ICMS from 2013-2016.

We, the editors and all co-authors, hope for a great interest in this textbook. Our intention is that we want to pass on our experience in the planning, construction and operation of museums. Experiences, solutions, examples for the entire field of technical building equipment including fire protection, exhibition architecture, CAFM, equipment for restoration workshops, risk analyses and emergency management are taught. This textbook is aimed at all those who deal with the construction and operation of museums.
